Short Term post in DA available over the summer

The RTÉ Investigations Unit, through assistance with Dr Sarah Jane Delany is interested in hiring an individual with expertise in data analysis and data management. This position would be for a short-term basis.

Currently the RTE Investigations Unit is trialing the use and potential of data analytics in particular areas of investigative journalism.

We require somebody to assist us in assessing and building on a large volume of work already in place.  The objective would be to incorporate multiple datasets into a single coherent server-based SQL database.  We are hoping that this database can be queried across a range of criteria to identify patterns/outliers to guide research and to then follow threads of inquiry across multiple datasets.  This would need to be done in a way that can easily facilitate the addition of further datasets if the trial is successful.  The work would involve looking at how the data is structured, how it could be structured better and how best to maximise the investigative potential of the data. As part of this role, we would also require the database/dataset to be managed on an internal server.

This role is a paid role and we would require the interested candidate to be available to begin work from approximately May 16th.  We are very open to facilitating college obligations in relation to working hours.

If you wish to apply, or for more information, please contact John Cunningham on 0872633826 or by email: John.Cunningham@rte.ie

A copy of your CV and a paragraph on why working with the RTE Investigations Unit would interest you, would be appreciated.

Invitation to Guest Lecture/Tutorial on Model Based Testing

Stephane Maag from Sud Telecom Paris (http://www.telecom-sudparis.eu/fr_accueil.html) will be visiting DIT, School of Computing from April 18th to April 22nd 2016. During his visit he will be giving a guest lecture and tutorial on Model Based Testing.

Model-based testing (MBT) is the automatic generation of software test procedures, using models of system requirements and behavior. Although this type of testing requires significantly more up-front effort in building the model, it offers substantial advantages over traditional software testing methods.

Stephane's lectures and tutorials will be 'protocol oriented', tackling black-box testing: from a formal model (Extended Finite State Machine (EFSM) based + Message Sequence Chart(MSC)), the automatic test suites generation techniques will be seen followed by testing architectures that may be used to execute the test suites in practice (after an  intro to TTCN3(Testing and Test Control Notation), coverage and concretisation).  Testing the functional aspects from the interface/PCO viewpoint.

In the practical element he will be using PragmadevStudio (http://www.pragmadev.com/) An academic version is available but this has been installed on SOCAPPSRV1 which is accessible from the lab machines.

The lecture sessions will be held on Monday April 18th 2016 from 14.00-15.00 in KA-320, and Tuesday  April 19th from 16.00 to 17.00 in KA-1-017.
The practical session will be held on Wednesday April 20th  2016 from 9.00 to 11.00  in AU-1-005 (Aungier St. Lab)

Oppertunity to Earn some Cash to Code a Web Survey

Hi there,
Dave Kilmartin for the DIT Careers office is looking for one of our students to do a small bit of work on coding up a web survey. This is a once off task with a payment of about 800 euro. In addition to the money, this would be a nice thing to have on the CV as a project.

The survey would be a bit more complex than can be handled by Survey Monkey so a HTML5 form based survey would be best. I can provide a bit of guidence on this.

If you are interested in this drop me an email. This would have to be done in the next month or so.
