Exemptions

If you wish to apply for an exemption for a semester 2 module, could you do so by the end of this week?

More help available for the Hadoop VM

For students of Programming for Big Data:

Mike Shaw an MSc student sent me the following message, having missed Friday's meet-up in the MSc study room:

"I can meet anyone in the lab at 6 before class if they need help with the VM.

I have mine up and running and have actually written some scripts which bring up the various Hadoop services and shut them down, making life a lot easier!"

Temporary Fix for Timetables

The timetabling system appears not to be working for class groups at the moment which makes it difficult for you to access your individual class group timetable.

Please note that full lists of all modules available to all full time and part time students are available by selecting a timetable for the programme code DT228A and DT228B respectively by logging into the timetabling system as normal.

A temporary fix for this semester for the class groups issue has been set up as follows:

Enter your class group code (see below) as the Username on the timetabling system with no password. You can then press the More button located beside the Timetable label on the top right hand side of the screen.  This will display the class group timetable in graphic form for semester 2 and you can select it in PDF format too.

Class groups codes:

Full time students
DT228AASD   - ASD specialism
DT228ADA     - DA specialism
DT228AIKM   - IKM specialism

Part time students
DT228B1A   - first year ASD
DT228B1I    - first year IKM
DT228B1D  - first year DA

DT228B2A  - second or subsequent ASD
DT228B2I   - second or subsequent  IKM
DT228B2D  -second or subsequent  DA

Remember if you are not following the normal progression and taking modules outside of what is normally applicable to your class group you will have to check other timetables for the times and rooms.

Programming for Big Data Class

The Programming for Big Data class will use a Unix virtual machine running Hadoop for the lab exercises and the assignment.

As it takes some time to do this it would be very useful for students, in advance of the first class, to set up and bring this virtual machine to the class on a USB key, if possible.

Instructions on how to do this are available at http://bit.ly/1sVyoxq.  Point 2 and 3, setting up the VM and saving the VM are the sections in this document to be completed before the class.

Software Project Management 19th January - Location

The Software Project Management class on Monday 19th will be in KA-G-026.

As part of the  module, I'm proposing that we aim to manage a real world project to build an online learning resource. The class will decide but it could be something like creating an online community of practice to support learning  software project management, studying for PMP exams or anything else.
We would work with two other groups of students. One group can identify content needed, the other can develop analysis and design documentation to support the technical development.

We would be following PMBOK  Project Management Framework : Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Closing.

If you get a chance before Monday have think about what type area you would like to create a resource for and how you think a project like this could work and achieve the assessment you need.

Looking forward to seeing you on Monday.

Regards

Deirdre
