Programming for Big Data

There has been some confusion about the exact programming requirements for the Programming for Big Data module.

This module covers 3 different programming environments - SAS, R  and Hadoop (Java programming).      There is an expectation that all who take this module are competent programmers. Experience in SAS programming is not necessarily required but some knowledge of R and Java is required.

The Hadoop section of this module gives students the most problems.  It does not just require Java programming experience but also requires general systems integration experience.  Hadoop is installed on a Linux virtual machine.  The Java code is developed in Eclipse outside of the VM and data and jar files need to be passed to the VM to be run.   The environment setup and management can prove to be difficult for some students who do not have adequate programming experience.

Please note also that there are limited spaces (max 25) on this module across both part time and full time students.

If there are any specific questions  - please contact Sarah Jane Delany.

Wednesday 26 November 2014

Registration before November 30th

Please note that students not registered by 30th November 2014, will be removed from official registration records and no longer considered to be students of the Institute. We have been advised by IS services that students should connect to the eduroam network when using the wifi.  This should alleviate some of the issues students may have been having with the wifi.

When using eduroam your username is your student id@dit.ie  and the password is your normal password.

Details on how to connect to eduroam are available here

Semester 1 Assignment Schedule

The Semester 1 Assignment Schedule is now available under "Important Documents & Forms" on the left of the blog. This should give you a general idea of when assignments are due.

SAS OnDemand & VPN Access for Probability & Statistics Students

To join the Probability & Statistical Inference module on SAS OnDemand for Academics please use the following link:

https://odamid.oda.sas.com/SASODAControlCenter/enroll.html?enroll=c60247d3-a697-4903-b4fa-468277a3a491

Details for connecting to the DIT VPN are available from:

http://www.dit.ie/computing/studentresources/vpnaccess/

Here is a summary of the steps to connect to the Cavan server across the VPN (thanks to Jack O'Neil):
  1. Install the latest version of Firefox. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
  2. Install the latest version of Java. https://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
  3. Search for configure Java on your computer and click to open
  4. Go to the security tab, set the Security Level to Medium (alternatively you could leave the security level at high and add https://ditnet.dit.ie to the exception list)
  5. Open up Firefox and go to https://ditnet.dit.ie/ (firefox provides the best support for Juniper Client and is their recommended browser for using the VPN software)
  6. Log in using your student number and ICT Password
  7. Click on the Start button in the bottom right
  8. Install the Juniper Setup Client when prompted
  9. Click on the link to continue when finished
  10. Firefox will try to block the site from running the software, and you will be automatically redirected to the download page. You need to be quick to click the allow button (this took me quite a few tries!)
  11. Their SSL certificate is out of date, so Java will complain. Ignore all of the warnings, keep clicking continue, allow etc.
  12. Once everything is installed you’ll see a popup telling you you’re connected
  13. Open up Remote Desktop Connection and connect to cavan.ict.ad.dit.ie
  14. Log in using ICTDOMAIN\<Your Student Number> and your DIT password

Programming for Big Data - room change

The Programming for Big Data class tomorrow evening (Weds 5th) will take place in lab AU-1-006 in Aungier Street.

Also, the USB key for taking a copy of the VM needs to be a 16GB key and not a 16MB key as previously mentioned.

Friday 28 February 2014

Programming for Big Data - Hadoop section

For those attending the Programming for Big Data module the Hadoop part of the course is starting next week.   We will be providing a Virtual Machine with Hadoop installed, a copy of which will be available on the first night to download in the labs.

The VM is large, approx 9MB, so if you want to take a copy of this VM we suggest bringing a 16MB USB key to class.   These are available in Right Click on Camden Street for approx €18.

If you want to use the VM on your laptop or other machine you will need to have VirtualBox installed.

If you want to install Hadoop yourselves, please note that it needs a Linux-based OS - you cannot install it easily on a Windows machine.

All options will be covered at the first lecture.

Computational Techniques in Bioinformatics option module

To any full time MSc student interested in taking Computational Techniques in Bioformatics as an option module, the lecture time is Monday 3pm to 5pm in KE-G-043.

Please note that the interest in this module is low and if the numbers attending during the first week are not adequate the module will not be able to run.   So please also attend lectures in week 1 for a different option module that you can take if Bioinformatics does not run.

Each year Mark Deegan of the School of Computing (along with a number of other staff) arrange a Project Fair where students can showcase their projects to over 200 industrial guest. This would be a good opportunity for students who have completed or will be completed in March to showcase their project to potential employers.

I am writing to invite you to register for the DIT Kevin Street Project Fair.
This is an annual event which showcases the project work of students at all levels in the School of Computing and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at DIT Kevin Street.
The Project Fair attracts over 200 industry guests and is a great way to meet potential employers or business partners.
It gives an excellent opportunity for a dry-run of your presentations for final-year project students
There is a prize fund of over €10,000 including several category prizes of over €1,000 each and an overall top prize of €5,000 sponsored by Ocuco Software.
I would strongly encourage you to register for this event. All you need to do now to secure a place is to submit your registration details at the link below.

Please feel free to circulate this invitation to any other students across the two schools who may be interested in presenting their work at the project fair.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

MSc Research Methods Portfolios

Hi all,

please submit a hardcopy of your portfolios to the School of Computing office (A324) into the box marked "MSc Research Methods"

If you have already submitted your complete portfolio to me there is no need to submit it again,
but if you have left a few bits out, you need to get them to me.

If you put your portfolio in my pigeon-hole in A324, that's perfect also.

If you updated your proposal based on my feedback, a new hardcopy is needed (so that I can show it to the externs).

Also you need to print out a copy of the other bits: the five papers, the thesis shell, etc.
