SAS Certified Predictive Modeller Exam

For DIT MSc students who have completed the Data mining or Machine Learning modules SAS Ireland have kindly offered to make the "SAS Certified Predictive Modeler using SAS Enterprise Miner 7 Credential" exam available free of charge. Full details of the certification and some details of the exam are available from:

http://support.sas.com/certify/creds/pm.html

The exam takes the form of a series of multiple choice questions that are answered by creating and modifying projects in SAS Enterprise Miner. The exam takes three hours and the pass mark is 70%. About half of the students who have taken the exam in the past have passed it and been awarded the certification.

While SAS make the exam available for free, students are required to make a €25 donation to charity in order to access the exam, so as to discourage people from signing up but not actually showing up (SAS Ireland have to pay a fee for each student who signs up for the exam).

The exam will most likely take place on Friday the 8th of March from 16:00 - 19:00. If you would like to take the exam please email Brian.MacNamee@dit.ie with the subject heading "SAS Exam" before 23:00 on Tuesday 12th February to indicate this.

These guest, drawn from across the ICT sector in Ireland and abroad, represent employers with a significant number of job vacancies to be filled.
The Project Fair is a great opportunity for students to meet and talk with industry representatives and to discuss the projects they have undertaken as part of their studies at DIT Kevin Street.
While the project fair is primarily aimed at Final Year Project students, other individual or groups entries will also be considered.

Exam Results Advice

*** To answer questions from students who have failed modules Brian Mac Namee will be available in room  KA-3-024 (third floor of the annex building) on Wednesday from 17:00 - 18:00 and on Thursday from 17:00 - 18:10. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis strictly within the times given above due to teaching commitments. ***

MSc exam results are due out on Wednesday the 6th of February. The pass mark for all modules is 40%. Module results are a weighted average of exam and/or continuous assessment (CA) component results (please note different modules have different exam and CA weightings). There is no requirement to pass the individual components separately, just to achieve an overall grade of 40% or above.

Should you fail a module you will receive a grade comment code indicating the action you should take to address this issue. The different codes depend, amongst other things, on whether it was the exam component or continuous assessment component that caused a student to fail a module. The most likely codes you will receive are:
  • RE: Repeat the exam for the failed module at the supplemental session* or retake the module. (Supplemental marks will be capped at 40%.)
  • RAS: Repeat the exam and/or the continuous assessment component of a module at or before the supplemental session or retake the module. (Supplemental marks will be capped at 40%.)
  • RAC: Repeat all components of a module at or before the supplemental session or retake the module. (Supplemental marks will be capped at 40%.)
  • SE: Repeat the exam for the failed module at the supplemental session without prejudice or retake the module ("without prejudice" means that, due to reported personal circumstances, a student's first attempt at this module is not counted and their repeat mark will not be capped at 40%).
  • SAS: Repeat the exam and/or the continuous assessment component of a module at or before the supplemental session without prejudice or retake the module ("without prejudice" means that, due to reported personal circumstances, a student's first attempt at this module is not counted and their repeat mark will not be capped at 40%).
* The supplemental exam session takes place in late August.

If a student receives an RAS, RAC or SAS code for a module they should contact the School of Computing office on 01 402 4728 or at cspg@dit.ie to discuss their options. In particular it is important for students to determine the appropriate repeat strategy that they should take. It is important to note that repeat continuous assessment is only available for some modules - the school office will be able to let you know which ones.

The following are some illustrative repeat scenarios (assuming equal exam and CA weightings):

-->
Exam Mark CA Mark Overall Mark Grade Comment Possible Repeat Strategy
72 56 64 Passed!! No repeats.
32 55 44 Passed!! No repeats.
82 5 44 Passed!! No repeats.
23 50 37 RE Repeat the exam at the supplemental exam session.
45 21 33 RAS REPEAT CA AVAILABLE: Repeat the continuous assessment component.

A student could also decide instead to just repeat the exam in the hope that they get 58% or over which would be enough for an overall pass.
45 21 33 RAS REPEAT CA NOT AVAILABLE: Repeat the exam in the hope of getting 58% or more which would be enough for an overall pass.
21 17 19 RAS REPEAT CA AVAILABLE: Repeat the continuous assessment component before the supplemental session and the exam at the supplemental session.
21 17 19 RAS REPEAT CA NOT AVAILABLE: Repeat the exam in the hope of getting 60% or more which would be enough for an overall pass.
N/A 21 21 RAC REPEAT CA AVAILABLE: Repeat the continuous assessment component before the supplemental session.
N/A 21 21 RAC REPEAT CA NOT AVAILABLE: In this case the student will have no choice but to repeat the module when it is next available.

To answer questions from students who have failed modules Brian Mac Namee will be available in room  KA-3-024 (third floor of the annex building) on Wednesday from 17:00 - 18:00 and on Thursday from 17:00 - 18:10. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis strictly within the times given above due to teaching commitments.

Wordpress Assistance Needed

A fellow student is looking for some assistance with Wordpress - specifically with customising the BBPress Foum plugin.
If you have any experience with this or know of someone who may be able to help I would be grateful if you could contact me. It should only take a small amount of time.

Regards

Deirdre
