To all DT249 and MSc students taking Geographic Information Systems
===================================================================

The following is a quick HOW-TO guide to help you access the various
services you'll need.

Rgds,
Mark.

Access to DIT network from outside DIT network (VPN)
----------------------------------------------------
- go to ditnet.dit.ie
- there is an instructional video at
http://www.dit.ie/computing/studentresources/vpnaccess/
- this is a direct link to the login page -
https://ditnet.dit.ie/dana-na/auth/url_default/welcome.cgi

Access to GIS server (needs VPN)
--------------------------------
- From a computer running Windows 7:
- Start->All Programs->Accessories->Remote Desktop Connection
- Server URL is cork.ict.ad.dit.ie
- if you expand this dialog box you can save a profile containing the
server URL, your Log In and the domain (ICTDOMAIN)

Access to material on Webcourses (doesn't need VPN)
---------------------------------------------------
- https://idp.dit.ie/idp/Authn/UserPassword
or
- http://www.dit.ie/webcourses

If you forget your password
---------------------------
- go to mypassword.dit.ie
- you need to register for this to use it

Access to ESRI Virtual Campus (Online GIS course)
-------------------------------------------------
- go to training.esri.com

- go to "My Training"->"Create new account"
- follow instructions to create "ESRI Global Account"
- IMPORTANT: Use your DIT UserId as your ESRI ID.
- IMPORTANT: Use your DIT email address
- These are important so that I can track your progress and allocate
marks. It's IN YOUR INTEREST to get this right.

- to access ESRI course material
- go to "My Training"->"Login"->"My Virtual Campus Training".
- under "Start a New Web Course" enter the code that I gave you to
activate the module. Press "GO", ENTER will not work.
- "Learning ArcGIS Desktop (for ArcGIS 10)" should appear on your
"Courses In Progress" list.

Fee Implications of Exemptions and Deferrals

In response to some queries here is clarification with regard to the fee implications of deferrals and exemptions for part-time students:

  • Exemptions: Students that receive an exemption for a module must pay a fee for that module.
  • Deferrals: Students that defer a module that they have registered for and paid for are not entitled to a fee refund.

We strongly recommend that students take the option to pay only half fees at the beginning of the first semester to allow flexibility in case of a change of mind at the beginning of the following semester.

Part-time Induction & Fee Advice

Thanks to everyone who came along to the part-time induction session on Saturday, and once again welcome to DIT.

On Saturday most people confirmed modules for semester 2 or changed module choices from the default set, and so will receive an updated fee amount from DIT registrations in the coming weeks. Based on this new amount you will be given the option to pay half now and half at the beginning of semester 2 (approximately the end of February). We strongly recommend that you take this option.
