You will all have probably received an email from the Examinations Office by now detailing the exam timetable for January. One important thing to note is that this timetable includes details of all of the modules on your stream, rather than just the modules that you are taking. You can just ignore the details of modules you are not taking.
The exam timetable sent out by the Examinations Office does not include details of exam locations. Exam locations are posted on the noticeboard in the main Kevin St foyer every morning in the exams period and you need to make sure to check this noticeboard for up to date exam location details.
This is the central noticeboard for all students attending the MSc programmes in the TU Dublin

Dissertation Support Sessions
The message is primarily for students who wish to commence their MSc
Dissertation in Semester 2 & previously had a proposal that was not
ready.
The dates given below are not for students who are currently taking Research Methods and Proposal Writing in Semester 1. There are different dates for you. Ask your lecturer.
The aim of these support sessions is to assist students who have their dissertation proposal either finished or nearly finished.
The deadline for submitting of proposals is 21st January deadline.
If you would like to get your proposal approved in advance of this date (and avoid the presentation in February) then these session are an opportunity for you to meet to discuss your proposal. We can identify any possible issues that will need more research in order to complete your proposal.
Remember if you get your proposal approved then you get some preliminary work completed in advance of formally starting in Semester 2.
If you are still in the early days of developing your proposal or just an idea, you can still come along. But priority will be given to students who are either finish or nearly finished their proposal
I will be in room KE-4-008 (4th floor of Kevin St main building) between 5:30pm - 6:15pm on the following dates.

Room AU-3-030
In order to keep room AU-3-030 as a resource for MSc students we need to keep track of usage of the room. So, from next week there will be a sign-in clipboard in the room and we would like you to sign in when you use the room, noting the time that you arrive and the length of time that you expect to stay. This data will be used for absolutely no purpose other than generating aggregate data on how often the room is being used, so that we can make a data-driven argument for keeping AU-3-030 as an MSc resource.
Also, please continue to following the following rules regarding keys (again, this is important in maintaining this room as an MSc resource):

- The porters at the main Angier St. entrance hold the keys to AU-3-030.

Temporary Position with Irish Times - Semantic Content Enrichment
The Irish Times have a temporary (8-12 weeks) role for an individual interested in the data mining/ semantic web / natural language processing/document classification space.
This will be part of a large project in which t the system that produces the newspaper and the system that produces the website will be replaced with an integrated CMS. They are also installing a Semantic Content Enrichment system called Temis into theeditorial workflow. Temis will perform entity-extraction services over unstructured article data sets and suggest people, places, companies, organisations, stock-tickers and categories.
The role to train the Temis engine is in two parts:
1) Load up as many dictionary terms we can find , particularly relating to Irish localisation
e.g. Dail, Taoiseach
2) The more involved task of training the engine to recognise Irish Times articles and
categorise them as per an agreed Irish Times topic list e.g. Articles about the Central
Mental Hospital in Dundurm should be categorised under Mental Health.
Here are some links to the Content Enrichment’s website:

Fee Implications of Exemptions and Deferrals
In response to some queries here is clarification with regard to the fee
implications of deferrals and exemptions for part-time students:
We strongly recommend that students take the option to pay only half fees at the beginning of the first semester to allow flexibility in case of a change of mind at the beginning of the following semester.
- Exemptions: Students that receive an exemption for a module must pay a fee for that module.
- Deferrals: Students that defer a module that they have registered for and paid for are not entitled to a fee refund.

Part-time Induction & Fee Advice
Thanks to everyone who came along to the part-time induction session on Saturday, and once again welcome to DIT.
On Saturday most people confirmed modules for semester 2 or changed module choices from the default set, and so will receive an updated fee amount from DIT registrations in the coming weeks. Based on this new amount you will be given the option to pay half now and half at the beginning of semester 2 (approximately the end of February). We strongly recommend that you take this option.
