Systems Architectures lecture 15-12-2011 + extension to CA deadline
(1) There will be no lecture this evening (15-12-2011) due to illness.
(2) It has been brought to my attention that there are two broken links on my web-page (the second CA and the exams questions related to new material). I have emailed the files to the list of emails that I have for the class. If I have missed anybody email me and I can send you a copy. As one of the links is the assignment and this may have caused delays in some of you undertaking the work, I am extending the deadline until the 22nd December.

Dublinked Thematic Workshop
The first event of the Dublinked innovation network is a planning themed workshop to explore the potential of planning open data, including topics such as Strategic Planning, Planning Application, and issues surrounding Environment & Heritage. This is in response to the high demand for planning information since the launch of the Dublinked open data portal.
Workshop participants will hear from Planning Experts, Local Authority Planning Representatives and a new startup company that is currently using open data to develop a planning application. There will also be a demonstration of additional planning data to be added to Dublinked.ie. The format will give participants an opportunity to develop ideas on how they might use this data differently and to voice their views on further data they would like.

Event - James Gleick The Information: A History, A Theory and Flood Nov 3rd
It's sponsored by SFI and admission is only €5.
Book tickets:
http://www.sciencegallery.com/events/2011/11/james-gleick
From Amazon:
"James Gleick, the author of the bestsellers Chaos and Genius, brings us his crowning work: a revelatory chronicle that shows how information has become the modern era’s defining quality—the blood, the fuel, the vital principle of our world.
The story of information begins in a time profoundly unlike our own, when every thought and utterance vanished as soon as it was born. From the invention of scripts and alphabets to the long misunderstood “talking drums” of Africa, James Gleick tells the story of information technologies that changed the very nature of human consciousness. He provides portraits of the key figures contributing to the inexorable development of our modern understanding of information: Charles Babbage, the idiosyncratic inventor of the first great mechanical computer; Ada Byron, the poet’s brilliant and doomed daughter, who became the first true programmer; pivotal figures like Samuel Morse and Alan Turing; and Claude Shannon, the creator of information theory itself.
An then the information age comes upon us. Citizens of this world become experts willy-nilly: aficionados of bits and bytes. And they sometimes feel they are drowning, swept by a deluge of signs and signals, news and images, blogs and tweets. The Information is the story of how we got here and where we are heading."
